The History of PUEBLO

Founded in Saladillo; district Jamao del Norte, Dominican Republic. We are a non profit organization trying to bring the local campesinos out of the stone age where they’ve been held captive for decades

We are a small but efficient organization, spending very little on administration. We are also very flexible, and can handle all types of groups that want to come and help us.

In 2002, a group of students came through with International Student Volunteers, and through their input, the PUEBLO Project became "official" in 2003. Our parent company, Get Wet Adventure, is the proud sponsor of the project.

Get Wet has always given about 10% of it's income to the local teachers, so they could buy school uniforms for children in poor families. No uniform – No school. We have always had the idea to bring the poor “campesinos” into the year 2000 and ISV was the perfect partner to help us do that at the time.

Since 2002, more than 270 students have helped us with their outstanding spirit and their donations. First, we remodeled the School, near our base, The Hut. Second, we ran water lines down to the village we work in. We have built 3 houses and picked up more than 8 tons of garbage. Through all this work we have put pressure on the local authorities and they have finally repaired the water pump (out of service for two years!), delivering water for more than 8000 people.

In 2006 than we had the largest political success so far. The new mayor in “Jamao del Norte” declared his full cooperation, and the last day of our last ISV group he personally showed up to the Hut to thank the students for their work (see picture at right). He then collected the garbage we'd been picking up and declared that he will collect the garbage in the village on a weekly basis!

P.U.E.B.L.O now works independently but continues with the goals of improving the lives of these poor people, now in three countries, who could not possibly help themselves.
